Course Description

The PADI Equipment Specialist course teaches students the fundamentals scuba diving equipment. It empowers divers to fix equipment problems, make minor gear repairs, and maximize the life of their equipment. It also helps new divers make better gear purchasing decisions.

This course includes PADI eLearning and hands-on, in-person workshops conducted over 2 consecutive Tuesday evenings from 7pm until 9:30pm, at the TSC retail location.

The Equipment Specialist certification counts towards the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating.

What You Will Learn

During the hand-on workshops, we will do a deep dive into all mandatory scuba equipment, including masks, snorkels, fins, exposure suits (wetsuits and dry suits), BCDs, scuba cylinders and valves, regulators, dive computers and more. Students will learn how to check a BCD for leaks, and how to fix common BCD problems. Students will also learn how a regulator system works; what the changes in pressure are from the tank through the first and second stages into a breathable pressure for the divers use. Students will learn the difference between diaphragm and piston first stages, and how a first stage, second stage primary and alternate air source work. We will disassemble and re-assemble a regulator to better understand how a regulator functions. Finally, we also discuss the key items all divers should have in their save-a-dive kit.

Prerequisite

All you need is the PADI Scuba Diver certification or higher, and an interest in understanding scuba gear!

Includes

The TSC Equipment Specialist course fee includes use of the TSC facility, PADI eLearning materials, instruction and sample gear and tools for use during the evening workshops. Students may bring their own equipment (e.g. BCD) to practice repairs on their own gear. The course is conducted at the TSC retail location in Leslieville over two evenings. Students must complete the eLearning on their own time prior to the classroom sessions.

Note

While the Equipment Specialist certification is very beneficial and will help students develop a deeper understanding of their scuba diving equipment and solve potential issues they may experience , this course does not certify students as technicians. Students are encouraged to continue to employ the expertise of an authorized technician to service their equipment.
